Unlocking Super Pulsed CO₂ Laser Performance
At Kern Technologies, we design and manufacture premium CO₂ laser sources that offer unmatched flexibility and precision for a wide variety of material processing applications. A major differentiator of our product line is the ability to operate in super pulsed mode, a capability that dramatically enhances laser performance by delivering peak power levels far beyond the laser’s rated power output.
What is Super Pulsed Operation?
Super pulsed mode enables our lasers to generate pulses with peak power two to four times higher than their nominal power rating. For example, the KT500 laser, rated at 500 watts average power, produces peak pulses exceeding 1,200 watts. This performance boost is achieved by driving the gain medium harder for short bursts, enabling faster material penetration and improved cut quality.
Key benefits of super pulsed mode include:
- Enhanced piercing ability
- Reduced heat-affected zone (HAZ)
- Superior edge quality and detail resolution
These advantages make super pulsed CO₂ lasers the go-to choice for industries demanding precision, speed, and quality.
Why Pulsed Lasers Outperform CW Lasers
Traditional DC-excited glass tube lasers operate in continuous wave (CW) mode, where peak and average power are the same. This limits flexibility and precision, particularly in heat-sensitive applications. They also suffer from slow response times, leading to thermal distortion and less defined engraving.
Kern Technologies’ RF-excited metal slab lasers overcome these limitations with fast pulse modulation and high beam stability. Their ability to deliver high-peak-power pulses enables precise control over energy delivery which is crucial for cutting, engraving, and marking applications across a wide range of materials.
Pulse Shape Matters
The ideal laser pulse resembles a “top hat”—sharp on/off transitions with uniform power throughout. While no laser achieves this perfectly, our super pulsed technology comes close. Fast rise and fall times reduce wasted energy and limit unwanted heating during pulse transitions, resulting in cleaner edges, less discoloration, and tighter thermal control.
Prefer CW Operation? Unlock Quasi-CW Flexibility
While CW lasers have traditionally been preferred for certain applications requiring smooth, continuous energy delivery, Kern Technologies’ super pulsed CO₂ lasers can closely replicate CW behavior using quasi-CW operation. By increasing the pulse frequency, typically above 5 kHz, individual laser pulses overlap, forming a near-continuous waveform. This is demonstrated in the figure below as the output waveform transitions from low frequency, pulsed operation to mid to high frequency Quasi-CW operation while showing how these modes of operation compare to a true CW output.

The high-frequency, quasi-CW mode is especially beneficial in galvo-based scanning systems, where consistent energy delivery is critical for high-speed processing. Quasi-CW operation enables smoother transitions, reduces stitching, and improves uniformity across complex geometries or rapid vector paths.
Applications that benefit from quasi-CW operation include:
- High-speed surface marking on plastics, textiles, and coated metals
- Fine engraving with reduced heat-affected zones
- Micromachining of thin films and specialty materials
- Scribing or perforating materials with precision and minimal thermal damage
By adjusting frequency parameters, OEMs and system integrators can achieve the control and finish of CW operation while retaining the versatility, peak power, and modulation flexibility of a pulsed laser. This makes our LightWAVE series lasers ideal for both fixed-beam, galvo-based and hybrid platforms in demanding industrial applications.
Flexibility Built In
All Kern Technologies LightWAVE CO₂ lasers, KT100 through KT650, are built to operate across a wide pulse frequency range, allowing operators to fine-tune the laser’s behavior for engraving, cutting, and various other applications. Our OEM customers rely on this flexibility to build world-class laser processing systems.
We also work directly with system integrators and OEMs to ensure they can test materials and optimize laser parameters for their specific applications. Whether it’s deep cutting, fine engraving, or delicate marking, our super pulsed lasers deliver industry-leading performance and adaptability.
